During the planning to replace the aging Bonner Bridge, which connects the mainland to Hatteras Island, NC, DOT engineers knew they would be impacting a sensitive area.  To help preserve and restore the submerged aquatic vegetation in this area, a 500- foot wave break consisting of 101 precast concrete wave attenuators were installed to become a permanent living structure, that will reduce wave energy and protect aquatic vegetation and life within the 2.66 acre site.  These structures were designed not only to fully attenuate the wave energy but also to allow the passage of water and organisms around and through the structure.
